Audiology is a profession devoted to assessment and treatment of hearing loss. The goal of treatment is always better communication through better hearing. Often this includes the use of assitive technology in the form of hearing aids. However, hearing aids are only a small part of the treatment plan. The audiologist is the only professional who is specially trained on hearing aid technology, as well as incorporating hearing aid use into daily life to achieve the ultimate goal of better communication. Hearing Tests for Babies and Children: Approximately one to three babies out of 1000 are born with permanent hearing loss. Fortunately, children are never too young for a hearing test. It is important to have a baby's hearing tested within the first few days of life. In Indiana, newborn hearing screenings are performed prior to a baby leaving the hospital. Beyond newborn screening, children need to be tested if they seem to be having trouble hearing, or if they are not developing speech and language skills as expected. If after testing a hearing loss is confirmed, a hearing aid may be used to help the child hear.
