The hearing healthcare professionals at Main Line Audiology have helped more than 35,000 people improve their hearing using one simple philosophy – make sure every person who walks through the doors of one of their five locations feel like they’re part of the family.
Kathy Landau, Au.D., founded Main Line Audiology 30 years ago and built a successful practice with her father as the inspiration.
“My father was born with a profound, bi-lateral hearing loss yet he never let it interfere with anything he wanted to accomplish in his life,” she explained. “His attitude through out his life was incredibly positive. He viewed every set back as a challenge. I try every day to emulate that philosophy.”
Today, Main Line Audiology has locations in Narberth, Jenkintown, Ridley Park, Center City and Audubon. Dr. Landau credits the growth to her staff, saying each strives to treat each person as if they are a family member.
“We all truly care about the people that we work with and I think it’s reflected in the fact that our practice has grown by physician and patient referrals. Doctors become our patients -- then refer their patients. We even had one physician come in and say ‘I want your front desk to train my front desk in customer service, because you guys are the best.’ I think your greatest compliment is when your patients refer their family and friends.”
Professional care is part of the success equation, too. Main Line audiologists not only have the knowledge, experience and training, they also work with a variety of manufacturers so they can recommend the best hearing instrument option for each patient. Dr. Landau said her staff demonstrates what the technology sounds like in different listening environments in the office so they can program them for optimal hearing ability.
“It’s all about the customer,” Dr. Landau said. “Our goal at Main Line is to improve your hearing so that it’s the very best it can be and to educate you and your family in the process.”
In addition to Dr. Landau, other audiologists include Edwin J Winner, Au.D., Brian Harrington, Au.D., and Megan Gerhart, Au.D. Wendy Bronstein, patient care coordinator, has been Dr. Landau’s patient for 26 years.
Dr. Landau’s favorite part of being a healthcare practitioner is the opportunity to improve quality of someone’s life everyday by helping them hear better. Her favorite hearing device story involves a local physician who hadn’t done anything about her hearing loss because she feared it was too expensive.
“This beautiful, young doctor came to me with significant hearing loss. I fit her with the highest quality, very discreet, blue-colored hearing aids. She said it totally changed her life and her work. She didn’t realize she was leaning into her patients -- now she can sit back, relax and listen. When one of her 70-year old patients became depressed about her impaired hearing, this beautiful doctor was able to pull out one of her hearing aids and share her story. It was a touching interaction. By addressing her own hearing loss, she was able to help someone else change their life.”
Main Line Audiology conducts lectures and open houses, participates in local health fairs, and provides healthcare screenings and hearing health literature to the local community. As proponents of hearing protection, their website includes a lot of hearing health education and free ear plugs to people who call or stop by the office.
Dr. Landau said it’s hard for her to understand why some people wouldn’t want to hear their very best. She believes it’s important for everyone to find a qualified audiologist and follow their recommendations.
“We wouldn’t settle for blurry vision, why do we settle for poor hearing? My dream has always been that if anyone needs hearing help in the Philadelphia area, they’ll know where to come -- and Main Line Audiology will have an office close enough to them that they can come and experience excellent hearing care.”
