Five things to consider when purchasing a hearing aid

You probably have a lot of questions when it comes to purchasing hearing aids, all of which pertain to you finding the perfect device to fit your lifestyle and budget. Consider the various functions of hearing aids and how you will use them in your daily life to figure out the ideal solution for you.

How severe is your hearing loss?

When you're purchasing hearing aids, you'll first want to have your hearing evaluated by an audiologist to determine your level of hearing loss. Hearing loss is typically categorized as mild, moderate, moderately-severe, severe and profound. Based on your threshold for pitches, which are rated in decibels, your audiologist will determine your personal hearing loss.

You may receive a different hearing aid based on your lifestyle characteristics. Are you frequently in group meetings? Do you enjoy attending concerts, movies and other cultural events? Do you tend to spend time pursuing outdoor recreation? All of these lifestyle factors may come into play when choosing your hearing aid. Or if your job requires attentive listening and communication, this may also be considered.

Individuals who are occasionally in group settings, but do not travel or need to hear precise language may want to consider an option that is simple and easy-to-use. If you live a more leisurely lifestyle and want a hearing aid for the television or having better conversations with family, friends and grandchildren on a regular basis, this may be the best option for you.

You will also want to consider if you are in the market for an upgrade with the best technological advances or you'd prefer a simple advance with your new device.

What features appeal to you?

Would you like an anti-shock feature because you live in an urban area, or automatic adjustment settings that remember how you program daily activities to hear properly? Other features that are available with hearing aids include a directional microphone, which activates and orients a microphone that responds to sound depending on the direction it is coming from. This function is ideal for professionals that have frequent meetings. Other popular functions include direct audio input and telephone, or telecoil, switches that allow users to answer their phone with the touch of a button.

What accessories do you need?

You also will want to consider things like hook ups for the television and your cell phone, which will make it easier to hear these everyday items. You may also want to consider cleaning accessories that will help you with the upkeep of your hearing aid to preserve it for as long as possible.

After the purchase, will you actually wear the aid you select?

Following the adjustment period, you'll want to make sure that you will actually use your hearing aid. If you believe that a high-tech device is best suited for your lifestyle, make sure all the functionalities are worth it.
