Children of Boomers Want Their Parents to Listen Up

Untreated hearing loss can have devastating consequences on safety, work, as well as the overall quality of life. Yet, out of an estimated 31.5 million Americans who have hearing impairment, only 24 percent wear hearing aids.

The effect of diminished hearing on relationships has been well documented, but a new survey carried out by the Energizer Battery Inc.'s Energizer Specialty Batteries Division goes even further. Conducted among baby boomers and adult children of people with hearing loss, it shows that nearly half of surveyed children said a parent's hearing impairment affects their relationships.

Moreover, one in three respondents said their parent misses important details about their lives; while nearly one in ten stated they don't communicate or share information with their parent as much as they would like to because hearing loss gets in the way.

Other data that emerged from the survey suggests that untreated hearing loss impacts a parent-child relationship in various ways, and highlights some of the reasons why parents may resist getting a hearing aid, such as a mistaken belief that it makes them look older.

"All Ears" Hearing Survey is part of Energizer's "Live Healthy. KEEP GOING®" campaign, which encourages baby boomers to lead healthy and active lifestyles - with some help from battery-powered devices like hearing aids.
