National Women's Health Week: Hearing Health in Women

National Women's Health Week occurred May 10-16, 2009 and was coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health (OWH).

Among various medical conditions and their treatment and prevention, spotlight is also on hearing health. That is an important issue for women because, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, about 10 million females in the United States have significant hearing loss, and more than 2.5 million of those women are under age 45.

Unfortunately, studies show that women - especially younger ones - are more reluctant than men to get treatment for hearing loss, putting them at risk for depression and other significant emotional problems impacting their overall quality of life.

Besides getting tested for hearing loss and treated if necessary, the OWH recommends health and hearing-friendly lifestyle choices, including regular exercise, good nutrition, preventive screening, getting enough sleep, and managing stress, among other pro-active measures.
