Accepting Hearing Loss: Reluctance to Change is Hard on Your Ears

Studies show that as people get older, they become less responsive to change. This means that as their health declines and new illnesses and conditions begin to set in, they may be more reluctant to seek the treatment they need.

This applies also to hearing aids. Currently, there are estimated 24 million people in the United States who have untreated hearing loss and a number of them refuse to get help because assistive technology represents major change.

It is true that adjustment to new hearing aids requires patience. People who are suddenly exposed to louder - and different - sounds than the ones they became accustomed to as their hearing gradually dimnished, have to be patient while their ears and brains are re-trained to process sounds through a hearing aid.

Once these people open themselves to the possibility of treating their hearing loss, they will have a better quality of life because their communication skills and ability to interact with others will increase.
