Comprehensive Hearing Tests Complete hearing assessments for patients of all ages are provided by experienced, licensed audiologists. The testing of children differs from that of adults, and requires visual reinforcement and play techniques to elicit the appropriate responses. Hearing testing for children under the age of 5 years is performed with two audiologists. Our pediatric audiologists will be able to obtain the necessary information, while making the testing enjoyable for the child. Hearing Aids Audiologists at RWJUH are state-licensed hearing aid dispensers. A full line of hearing aid related services are offered, including: counseling selection fitting of appropriate amplification repair/cleaning services real ear measurements electro-acoustic hearing aid analysis RWJUH offers state-of-the-art technology with a competitive edge on pricing. Every hearing aid purchase comes with a 30-day adjustment period and free follow-up appointments during the first year. Dizziness / Balance Disorders Videonystagmography (VNG)/Electronystagmography (ENG) is a diagnostic test for patients with vertigo, dizziness, or balance disturbances. This painless procedure is used to determine the cause of dizziness and/or other symptoms, so that a proper course of treatment can be prescribed. Electrocochleography can also be performed to evaluate a patient who is suspected to have Meniere’s Syndrome. Electro-diagnostic Tests Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) testing, ASSR and the Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) tests are objective diagnostic tools used to determine the integrity of the auditory system without the need for patient response. These tests are used for infant testing, to determine the degree of auditory sensitivity, or on adults to determine neurological conditions. These tests are painless and effective for patients of all ages that need more information than can be provided from just a basic hearing test. (Sedated BAERs are also available.) Central Auditory Processing (CAP) Evaluations Children over the age of 7 years, who exhibit difficulty following directions or paying attention when background noise is present, may have Central Auditory Processing Disorders. Hearing sensitivity can be normal, but the ability to follow auditory commands or information may be impaired. CAP testing is an effective way to determine educational needs for a child and assist teachers in finding a better way of learning for the child. Tinnitus Evaluations Tinnitus or “Ringing in the Ears” has become a debilitating problem for many older adults. The audiologists at Robert Wood Johnson are trained for evaluating tinnitus and providing recommendations for appropriate rehabilitation for tinnitus sufferers.
