Dizziness / Balance Disorders Videonystagmography (VNG)/Electronystagmography (ENG) is a diagnostic test for patients with vertigo, dizziness, or balance disturbances. This painless procedure is used to determine the cause of dizziness and/or other symptoms, so that a proper course of treatment can be prescribed. Electrocochleography can also be performed to evaluate a patient who is suspected to have Meniere’s Syndrome. Electro-diagnostic Tests Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) testing, ASSR and the Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) tests are objective diagnostic tools used to determine the integrity of the auditory system without the need for patient response. These tests are used for infant testing, to determine the degree of auditory sensitivity, or on adults to determine neurological conditions. These tests are painless and effective for patients of all ages that need more information than can be provided from just a basic hearing test. (Sedated BAERs are also available.) Central Auditory Processing (CAP) Evaluations Children over the age of 7 years, who exhibit difficulty following directions or paying attention when background noise is present, may have Central Auditory Processing Disorders. Hearing sensitivity can be normal, but the ability to follow auditory commands or information may be impaired. CAP testing is an effective way to determine educational needs for a child and assist teachers in finding a better way of learning for the child. Tinnitus Evaluations Tinnitus or “Ringing in the Ears” has become a debilitating problem for many older adults.
