It evaluates brain wave activity in the auditory centers of the brain when a series of clicks is presented to each ear. ABR can be used as a screening tool for newborns who are at risk for hearing loss, patients who may already have hearing loss, patients with Ménière's disease or similar disorders, and difficult-to-evaluate patients such those who are mentally retarded, autistic, or developmentally delayed.
