Kim Schur

Kim Schur has been the Director of the Center for Hearing and Communication-Florida since 2001. Prior to that, she worked as an audiologist at the Center for Hearing and Communication, New York, from 1995 to 2001. Dr. Schur received her Masters degree in Audiology from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York in 1995 and her Doctor of Audiology degree from Arizona School of Health Sciences in 2004. She is certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is also a member of the American Academy of Audiology. She has published and presented extensively at many national conferences.

Our Organization The Center for Hearing and Communication (new name for the League for the Hard of Hearing) provides hearing health services to people of all ages who have a hearing loss. With offices in New York City and Florida, CHC meets all of your hearing and communication needs through professional services that offer the highest level of clinical expertise and technical know-how available in the hearing healthcare field. Established in 1910, the Center for Hearing and Communication is a not-for-profit organization that serves as an educational resource for consumers and healthcare professional seeking information about hearing loss and hearing protection. Mission The Center for Hearing and Communication's mission is to improve the quality of life for infants, children and adults with all degrees of hearing loss. We accomplish our mission by providing hearing rehabilitation and human services for people who are hard of hearing or deaf, and their families, regardless of age, ability to pay, or mode of communication, and by striving to empower consumers to achieve their potential. Our leadership is exemplified by adhering to the highest clinical standards, conducting extensive hearing conservation and public education programs about hearing, and developing best practice models for disciplines that relate to hearing and communication Leadership Founded in 1910, CHC has grown to occupy an internationally-acknowledged leadership role in the field of hearing rehabilitation and human services. The professional staff, encompassing many disciplines, includes audiologists (both pediatric and adult specialists), speech-language pathologists, otologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, accessibility, ESL (English as a Second Language) counselors, nurses, and technical engineers. Through programs and services implemented by these professionals and through two state-of-the-art mobile audiology test centers, the Center serves over 20,000 people yearly in New York and the tri-state area, and 8,000 individuals in Florida. Over the years we have seen to the needs of over 1,500,000 people with hearing loss. Implemented by a staff skilled in multiple modes of communication, our extensive, culturally sensitive programs and services are available in spoken English and in numerous foreign languages, and in American Sign Language. The Center's vigorous commitment to advocacy manifests in our direct services and ongoing activities to ensure access to communication in every arena of life for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind.
Services

1,435,912 Floridians have a significant hearing loss. In Broward County the hard of hearing population approaches approximately 146,984 with an additional 8,375 categorized as Deaf. Listening Devices can offer dramatic improvement for around 95% of hearing losses. The effects of hearing loss are complex. Hearing loss often causes or is clustered with medical, financial, physical and emotional complications, such anxiety and a sense of isolation. A communicative challenge such as hearing loss not only affects the person who is facing hearing challenges, but also all those with whom s/he interacts. Center for Hearing and Communication is also a source of help for parents, siblings, friends, teachers, employers and employees of people impacted by hearing loss. Run by licensed audiologists, the Center & and its Audiology Department offer comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach. Hearing evaluations by licensed audiologists is available by appointment at our facility located at 2900 West Cypress Creek Road in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Click here to learn more about hearing evaluations. Hearing device evaluations, dispensing, maintenance and repair are offered. CHC-FL dispense over 250 hearing aids yearly. The latest technology is always available. Hearing challenges may need various solutions and CHC has all the information available to help. Our Center is a Cochlear Alliance member specializing in information and support for cochlear implant candidates. Cochlear Implants is a surgical breakthrough that restores hearing sensation to people who are profoundly deaf and cannot benefit adequately from amplification. Free onsite hearing screenings are held at the Center every Thursday from 9:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:00pm.
