Advanced Bionics and Gift of Hearing Foundation Partner to Enable Boy to Hear for First Time

Valencia, Calif., September 10, 2007 Understanding the importance of the precious gift of sound, Advanced Bionics Corporation continues its practice of good corporate citizenship when, in conjunction with the Gift of Hearing Foundation (GOHF) it presents a boy from Evanston, WY, with a device to enable him to hear for the first time. Advanced Bionics and GOHF have arranged for one qualifying individual within the U.S. to receive a cochlear implant, the only technology approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to restore a human sense. The presentation will occur at the Helping People Hear black-tie gala and auction co-sponsored by the GOHF and Advanced Bionics at The Collings Foundation and Transportation Museum in Stow, MA, on Saturday, September 15 at 5:30 p.m.

We at Advanced Bionics are proud to take part in this celebratory event that further raises awareness about the unique innovation of cochlear implants and the impact these devices have on individuals who are severe to profoundly deaf, said Anthony Arnold, Vice President of Marketing, Auditory. Working in collaboration with the Gift of Hearing Foundation has allowed Advanced Bionics to continue its mission of maximizing not only Daniel Marshalls hearing, but also the hearing potential of children and adults across the United States.

The highlight of the night will occur when 1-year-old Daniel Marshall, who was diagnosed at birth with profound hearing loss, is presented with a Bionic Ear donation from the GOHF. Daniel will be scheduled for surgery and device activation in the fall at University of Utah Medical Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. Daniel will now have the opportunity to hear the world around him thanks to his Harmony' Hi-Resolution Bionic Ear System manufactured by Advanced Bionics.

Advanced Bionics provided us with an opportunity to allow one more child to hear his mother say I love you, adds Eileen Jones, President and Founder of GOHF. For that we cannot thank them enough.

Originally fitted with hearing aids at the age of 4 months, Daniel experienced no significant hearing benefits. Wanting Daniel to hear the world around him, his parents hoped that by availing their son to cochlear implant technology he would have ears that could hear. Daniels journey to sound came to a sudden halt when his parents learned their health insurance provider denied coverage of the device and surgery. Unable to financially afford the device and procedure they turned to Let Them Hear Foundations (www.letthemhear.org) Insurance Assistance Program. Let Them Hear Foundation enlisted GOHFs assistance that, because of its already existing relationship with Advanced Bionics, has been able to give Daniel the technology that will enable him to hear.

When we received the phone call that alerted us that our son was to be the recipient of the device donation we were overjoyed! We are so thrilled that our son will be able to complete his journey to a world filled with sound. He will now know clearly the warmth and love in our voices, said Kimberly Marshall, Daniels mother.

Daniel will join more than 100,000 other individuals who currently benefit from this technology to restore hearing. Daniels cochlear implant will enable him to hear by providing a path around the damaged parts of his ear to directly stimulate his auditory nerve. Daniels Harmony HiResolution Bionic Ear System is designed to enhance music appreciation and improve hearing in a variety of difficult listening environments. The Harmony System provides significantly enhanced spectral resolution compared to conventional systems for a more natural representation of sound to help improve hearing performance.

The gala will also feature many famous faces, including Indy Car driver Tomas Scheckter and Formula One race car driver Jaki Scheckter. Being honored for their commitment to promoting hearing health and cochlear implant awareness are owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tony George and Greys Anatomys Dr. McDreamy, Patrick Dempsey. The night will also include both a silent and live auction in which several items will be up for bids, including a VIP package to the 2008 Indy 500, Tomas Scheckter's autographed and framed 2007 firesuit, and a three night stay at the Treasure Island Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
