Denver May 2005 Heather Whitestone McCallum, Miss America 1995 and Nucleus Cochlear Implant recipient, will address hundreds of fellow implant users as keynote speaker at Mountain Magic the 11th annual Georgia Peach Cochlear Implant Association Family Retreat. The retreat, which will be held June 10-12, 2005, at the Cohutta Lodge & Restaurant Conference Center in Chatsworth, GA, is intended to bring cochlear implant users, their families and hearing loss professionals together to share their experiences. In her keynote address, McCallum will discuss her experience with hearing loss and the obstacles she has faced, as well as her decision to receive a cochlear implant and her ongoing journey with the device.
Cochlear implantation is a unique experience and interacting with others who have been through and understand the process can be very beneficial, said Heather Whitestone McCallum. This retreat is the only one in the southern states to make this type of interaction possible and I am thrilled not only to be a part of it, but also to help other cochlear implant users by sharing my personal experiences.
In addition to her keynote address, McCallum will be available for an autograph and photo session.
Additional highlights of the program include:
- To Love, Honor and Program: personal reflections made by Kerry Payne, a Nucleus cochlear implant recipient who married his audiologist.
- Informational sessions on the latest technology in cochlear implantation.
- Tips on how to tackle insurance reimbursement obstacles and how to improve hearing.
- Recreational activities including barbecues, scavenger hunts, socials and outdoor sports.
About Cochlear Implants
Cochlear implants are a proven medical option for adults and children with severe to profound hearing loss. They are electronic devices, which bypass damaged hair cells in the inner ear, or cochlea, and stimulate the hearing nerve directly. Cochlear implants provide useful hearing and improved communication abilities to those who receive little or no benefit from hearing aids. They are the only medical device designed to restore one of the five key senses.
