New Technology for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People Available in Colorado

Public Education Forum to Be Held 6:30 p.m., January 22, 2004

Fort Collins, CO, January 2004 -
Information regarding new cochlear implant and bone anchored hearing aid technology will be presented to the public January 22, 2004, in Fort Collins, Colorado. W. Sean Conlon, M.D., a noted ear surgeon from the Alpha ENT Clinic in Fort Collins, will provide information on new hearing technology for people with hearing loss.

"The options deaf and hard of hearing people have with today's new technology are quite remarkable," said Dr. Conlon. "We now have highly effective surgical treatments for people with severe or total hearing loss."

New Cochlear Implant Technology
Dr. Conlon will present information on the HiResolution Bionic Ear System - a newly FDA-approved treatment for people with severe or profound hearing loss (nerve deafness) in both ears. The system, which delivers electrical pulses directly to the hearing nerve, provides higher resolution sound than previous cochlear implant technology.

New Bone Anchored Hearing Aid Technology
A new bone anchored hearing aid technology (BAHA) that is approved by the FDA for individuals with single-sided deafness will also be explained by Dr. Conlon. The BAHA system works through direct bone conduction.

Public Invited to Attend Forum
The public is invited to attend the forum, which is sponsored by Hear-N-Colorado, a non-profit organization that supports individuals with all levels of hearing loss.

"Hearing loss is an invisible but common disability," said Gladys Russell co-founder of Hear-N-Colorado. "One in ten people have significant hearing loss, which affects every aspect of their daily lives. We are pleased to have Dr. Conlon present information on new medical frontiers for people with hearing loss."

The forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the American Baptist Church, 600 South Shields St., Ft. Collins. Real-time captioning and refreshments will be available. Broadcast and print media are welcome.
