Advanced Bionics Releases New Research Results on HiResolution' Sound

VALENCIA, CA, January 2003 -- U.S. cochlear implant manufacturer, Advanced Bionics Corporation, announces the availability of three new research studies that report on patient performance with its HiResolution' sound technology. HiResolution sound is intended to make music more enjoyable and speech easier to understand in difficult environments.

"Preliminary Comparison of Performance between Patients Fit with the CII Bionic Ear and Patients Fit with the Nucleus 3G." M. Dorman (Arizona State University), A. Spahr (Arizona State University) and K. Kirk (Indiana University School of Medicine), June 2003.
In an independent study supported by NIDCD grant and contributions from all cochlear implant manufacturers, researchers compare performance between adults who use HiResolution sound and those who use the Nucleus 3 System. Results from the study's first reported findings indicate that there "are differences in performance between patients using the two implant systems." "Significant differences in performance (p

A study of 133 adults and children conducted by 11 cochlear implant centers in North America provides information on clinical topics related to converting patients from conventional strategies to HiResolution sound. Results show that 95% of adults and 100% of children use HiResolution sound after converting from conventional sound processing strategies. In addition, two case studies in which patients (one adult and one child) had interesting experiences are included.

Data compiled from IDE clinical trials and HiResolution software field trials by researchers at Advanced Bionics compare performance with conventional strategies to HiResolution sound. Results show that for adults, "comparison of three-month performance with conventional strategies [SAS, CIS or MPS] with one-month results with HiRes revealed a significant improvement with HiResolution sound on all speech perception tests." The majority of children "showed improvements in performance with HiResolution sound," and greater than 90% use HiResolution sound exclusively.

HiResolution sound
Advanced Bionics' HiResolution Bionic Ear System and CII Bionic Ear are the only cochlear implants with the technological capability to provide HiResolution sound. HiResolution sound is designed to provide a richer more detailed representation of sound than previous implant technology.

Users who have listened to conventional sound processing strategies for long periods of time should understand that it can take time to adjust and benefit from the increased resolution provided with HiResolution sound. While some users experience immediate improvements, others take time, and a very small number of users continue to prefer conventional strategies. It is important to work closely with the cochlear implant audiologist to set expectations and to put forth a plan to gain the very most out of HiResolution sound.
