Second Annual Cochlear Kids Camp Scheduled for September 12-15

(DENVER) - The second annual Cochlear Kids Camp, Sept. 12-15, 2002, will provide the opportunity for children with cochlear implants and their families to interact with one another while celebrating the successes they have achieved since the implantation of their devices. This one-of-a-kind camp will host 350 participants, including more than 60 families from 15 different states, at Snow Mountain Ranch in Winter Park, Colo.

Run by a complete staff of YMCA recreation experts and Colorado Neurological Institute (CNI) healthcare professionals under the guidance of Dr. David Kelsall, Medical Director of the Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center, the Cochlear Kids Camp enables children with cochlear implants to build new friendships and develop self-esteem in a caring and supportive environment. In addition to recreational activities, educational seminars are also offered covering topics such as insurance reimbursement, alternative therapy and family issues.

In its inaugural year in 2001, the camp hosted 26 cochlear implant families with more than 100 participants. The Cochlear Kids Camp is organized by the Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center and the CNI Center for Hearing, and it is sponsored by Cochlear Americas, manufacturer of the Nucleus cochlear implant systems, along with other foundations, camp families and private donors.

Founded as a nonprofit organization in 1988, the Colorado Neurological Institute has become the largest, most comprehensive neuroscience center in the Rocky Mountain region. CNI is located on the campus of Swedish Medical Center, where specialized teams of neuroscientists blend their knowledge, skills and talents to provide the highest level of care for patients with nearly every neurological illness.

Swedish Medical Center-HealthONE, a Level II Trauma Center with Pediatric Commitment, serves as the region's referral center for neurotrauma and is a recognized leader in the treatment of stroke. An acute care hospital with 368 licensed beds, Swedish is located in the south Denver metro area in Englewood, Colo.
