Taxi Plan is Ear-Raising

November 26, 2007 -- The city's Taxi & Limousine Commission will try out new technology to allow passengers with hearing aids to better understand and communicate with cabdrivers, The Post has learned.

For months, advocates for the disabled have been calling on the TLC to install a system that allows passengers with specialized hearing aids to hear the drivers not just loudly but clearly.

The technology includes induction loops that enable hearing-aid users to tune in to the sounds in the area. The loop allows the driver's voice to go directly to the hearing aid.

The cabs involved with the program will have signs that say they are equipped with the technology.
