House Ear Institute Recruits David Meyer to Lead Its Hearing Research

Los Angeles February 19, 2008 The House Ear Institute (HEI) announces the appointment of David I. Meyer, Ph.D., as executive vice president of research effective March 3, 2008. He was chosen to direct research at the Institute based on his experience as a cell biologist and his achievements in administering science programs and scientific affairs. Before joining the House Ear Institute, Dr. Meyer was vice president of research and scientific affairs at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Prior to that, he was on the faculty of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) for 18 years as a professor in the Department of Biological Chemistry, UCLA School of Medicine. Also at UCLA, Dr. Meyer served as the Associate Dean for Basic Science Programs and the Senior Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. He remains as Professor Emeritus at UCLA.

As Executive Vice President of Research, Dr. Meyer will be an integral member of the House Ear Institutes executive management team. He will work collaboratively with scientists and managers to expand existing programs and develop new avenues of scientific exploration to help the Institute reach its goals of advancing hearing science through cutting-edge research and groundbreaking approaches.

Dr. Meyer notes, HEIs advances in our understanding of the basic biology and genetics underlying the various types of hearing loss, coupled with its innovations in therapies, treatments and novel devices puts me in the enviable position of being able to coordinate a multifaceted research program, encompassing basic, translational and clinical approaches. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead and to providing the best possible support to our team of talented investigators.

Dr. Meyer assumes responsibilities from David Lim, M.D., who held the position for 13 years and will now focus on his own research as director of the Laboratory of Molecular Otology.

It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome Dr. Meyer to the House Ear Institute, and know he will build upon the strong foundation of scientific excellence established by Dr. Lim during his term. I am confident Dr. Meyer will immeasurably help the Institute continue that record of excellence and high achievements in the field of hearing science, James Boswell, CEO, House Ear Institute.

A native of Los Angeles, David Meyer earned both his bachelors doctoral degrees at UCLA. He has worked as a laboratory researcher/instructor at the Biocenter of the University of Basel, Switzerland and a staff scientist and research group leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany. He is a member of several scientific societies and study sections, and has served as an editor or editorial board member for several scientific journals including Journal of Cell Science. Dr. Meyer has won numerous awards for his work, most notably, the American Cancer Society Faculty Research Award. His area of expertise is in cell biology, studying membrane biogenesis and protein secretion.

About the House Ear Institute

The House Ear Institute (HEI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to advancing hearing science through research and education to improve quality of life. Established in 1946 by Howard P. House, M.D., the House Ear Institute has been engaged in the scientific exploration of the auditory system from the ear canal to the cortex of the brain for more than 60 years.

Institute scientists investigate hearing loss and ear disease at the cellular and molecular level, as well as the complex neurological interactions between the auditory system and brain. They are also working to improve hearing aids and auditory implants, diagnostics, clinical treatments and intervention methods. House researchers work with House Clinic physicians to integrate medicine and science through clinical and research trials that may directly benefit patients. The Institute shares its knowledge with the scientific and medical communities as well as the general public through its education and outreach programs. House Clinic physicians volunteer their time to teach specialty courses in the House Ear Institutes professional education programs, attended by more than 22,000 doctors and research fellows since 1946. Outreach programs for the public serve people with hearing loss and related disorders as well as offer information about general hearing health and hearing conservation.
