Viagra, a common drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, has again been shown to cause hearing loss. In a recent study, published in The Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), a clear relationship between hearing loss and the use of Viagra has been demonstrated.
The study, headed by Professor Gerald McGwin, PhD, reported, "It appears from these findings that the current government warning regarding hearing loss and the use of PDE-5i medications is warranted," said Dr. McGwin, a professor of epidemiology in the UAB School of Public Health. “Though there are limitations to this study, it is prudent that patients using these medications be warned about the signs and symptoms of hearing impairment and be encouraged to seek immediate medical attention to potentially forestall permanent damage."
The problem associated with hearing loss and the use of Viagra is thought to be in the drugs ability to increase blood flow. Reports of a relationship between the use of Viagra and hearing loss aren’t new to the research and medical community. Previous studies have also demonstrated this connection; however the most recent study is the first long term study to demonstrate the connection since originally warnings were put out in 2007.
For persons taking Viagra, if a loss of hearing is noticed it is recommended you contact your physician immediately. To learn more about this study and how Viagra may cause hearing loss, visit: Hearing Loss Causes: Viagra is a Culprit.
