Oticon’s Human Link Conferences Feature Prominent Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin, Ph.D.

oticon levitin danielSomerset, NJ, November 3, 2008 - Dr Daniel Levitin PhD, one of the world’s most prominent neuroscientists was featured as Keynote Speaker at two recent Oticon “Human Link Conferences” held in Atlanta and Denver.

Dr Levitin is the James McGill Professor in the Department of Psychology at McGill University. In addition to his New York Times bestseller “This Is Your Brain On Music: The Science of a Human Obsession,” Dr. Levitin has just released (August, 2008) his newest book “The World in Six Songs.” Dr Levitin is very well known among musicians and fans. Before becoming a neuroscientist, Dan was an accomplished musician, producer and record company executive.

In his engaging and entertaining presentations, Dr Levitin addressed how the human brain processes the vast array of sounds from phonemes to speech and from single notes to music. He spoke about bottom-up processes such as the physiologic basis of hearing and top-down processes, such as what happens to sound percepts as the brain organizes raw sound into meaningful messages.

According to Oticon Inc President Peer Lauritsen, “Dr. Levitin’s ability to translate the intricate neurophysiology and neuroscience involved in the perception of speech sounds, into useful and inspirational concepts to be applied to those with hearing loss was outstanding. Beyond acoustics and speech science, Dr. Levitin addressed the emotional content of sound and how emotional content impacts the listener with respect to speech content and music. Participants learned a great deal about sound, auditory processing and the impact of speech, music and emotion on short and long-term memory.”

Following his keynote address, Levitin engaged in workshops with attendees, addressing a multitude of topics including; spatiality, long and short term memory, absolute and relative pitch, computers, neural prosthetics and, Dr. Levitin autographed hundreds of books for participants.
