Consumer Reports Covers Hearing Aids & Hearing Protection

The July 2009 issue of Consumer Reports (CR) includes an article entitled Hear Well in a Noisy World that covers hearing aids, hearing protection and the process of shopping for hearing aids. The article can be accessed at:

The article was based upon following 12 patients for six months as they shopped for hearing aids, a national survey conducted by CR of 1,100 hearing aid consumers, and actual testing of the features of 44 hearing aids.

Among CR’s conclusions were that 73% of survey respondents were “highly satisfied” with their aids, although two-thirds of the consumers’ aids were misfit, amplifying either too little or too much.

Advice from CR for consumers purchasing hearing aids include: choosing a good provider (“a critical first step”); allowing time to adjust to new aids; getting educated about products; obtaining a comprehensive evaluation including real-ear measure verification of fit; and following up with the provider after fitting. The article also includes information about hearing aid styles, nonprescription (noncustomized, online) hearing aids, and information about hearing protection.
