The Senate companion bill of the Hearing Aid Tax Credit Act of 2005 (S. 1060) has been introduced by Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN). This legislation would provide a tax credit of up to $500 per device toward the purchase of hearing aids once every 5 years. The tax credit is non-refundable and may be used by a parent purchasing a hearing aid for a dependent child ($500 per dependent per device) or by individuals aged 55 or older who are purchasing a hearing aid for themselves. Original co-sponsors of the legislation include Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA), Gordon Smith (R-OR), Mark Dayton (D-MN), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and John Corzine (D-NJ).

Please contact your two Senators and Representative and ask them to co-sponsor S. 1060 and H.R. 414. You can visit ASHA's Take Action page at http://takeaction.asha.org to send e-mail or letters to your U.S. Representative and Senators if they have not yet signed on in support of this legislation. If your legislators have already signed on as co-sponsors, you'll get a default "thank you" letter to send to them! For more information, please contact Linda Lucas, ASHA's Director of Grassroots Advocacy, via e-mail at llucas@asha.org or by phone at 800-498-2071, ext. 4427.
