Dr. William F. House explains how he overcame adversity and criticism to create life-changing treatments for hearing disorders in "The Struggles of a Medical Innovator: Cochlear Implants and Other Ear Surgeries"

LOS ANGELES  June 6, 2011 - Dr. William F. House has often been referred to as the Father of Neurotology for his innovative work in the treatment of inner ear disorders. While his techniques and practices are now widely acclaimed, it wasn't always easy for him to get fellow doctors to believe in him. In his memoir "The Struggles of a Medical Innovator: Cochlear Implants and Other Ear Surgeries" (ISBN 1461046378), House explains how he became a doctor and shares some of his groundbreaking solutions.

House begins his memoir in dental school, where he first started in the world of healthcare and met the woman he would eventually marry. He became a dental officer in the United States Navy, then left the military for medical school. Following a residency in Otolaryngology at the Los Angeles County Hospital, and the myriad experiences it offered, Dr. House joined his brother Howard's otology practice.

The second section of the book dives into House's work with inner ear disorders. He details seven problems in the treatment of ear disease and hearing loss. He explains how he found solutions to help his patients live a better life. House then goes on to describe his life's stories, which range from experiences with the entertainment industry and legal system to his travels around the world.

"The Struggles of a Medical Innovator" concludes with comments from doctors House trained, early members of the cochlear implant team, his patients and his daughter. While his work was thought to be radical at first, their stories display just how celebrated House's innovative ideas are.

House believes that professionals in otolaryngology, speech and hearing, hearing sciences and other related medical professions will find his work the most interesting due to his heavy involvement with the controversial cochlear implant. He hopes that by sharing his insider's perspective to the world of medicine, he will inspire others to take risks and believe in their ideas and dreams.
