Vertigo is a symptom, not a disease entity. Therefore, there are many causes for this troubling symptom. In order to properly treat vertigo it is imperative to establish a diagnosis. Only then can the physician administer the correct treatment.
Some common causes of severe vertigo are Menieres Disease (excess fluid build up in the inner ear), acute labyrinthitis (bacterial or viral infection of the inner ear), positional vertigo (partials floating in the inner ear fluid that stimulate the inner ear with position change), motion sickness (stimulation of the inner ear due to movement of the inner ear fluid as an individual would experience in rough weather in a boat or airplane).
The underlying disease entity must be treated in order to correct the symptom of vertigo. Valium is an excellent suppressant of inner ear function and is the best medication for relieving the symptom. It can be given intravenously or by mouth depending on the severity of the vertigo.
