What contributes to itching ears, not just for those who wear hearing aids, but also for those who do not?

The two most common causes of itching ears are infection of the outer ear canal, and excessive cleaning of the ears. Wax serves a protective purpose, by preventing the ear canal skin from drying out: removing all the wax allows the skin to dry, and dry skin is itchy skin.
