Directional Hearing Aids
Research has shown that hearing aids that feature directionality help improve understanding of speech in noisy environments. Directional hearing aids allow the wearer to focus on sounds in front of them, while sounds from the rear and the sides are automatically suppressed. This directional technology is accomplished by installing additional microphones on the hearing aids in an effort to help focus the attention of the aids on sounds arriving from in front of the person. With the exception of other technology such as FM systems worn in addition to the hearing aids, this is currently accepted as the most efficient way to improve the ability to hear speech in the presence of background noise. Even while wearing directional hearing aids, it is helpful for wearers to situate themselves so that the majority of the competing background sounds are behind them. They should also remember to face the person who is talking.
