Charity Seeks to Bring Education and Hearing to Deaf Youth
HealthyHearing.com is thankful for the holiday season. Because the holiday season is the time of year to give thanks and remember those in need, every Thursday for the next two months we will dedicate an article to feature different charities which provide assistance for those suffering from hearing loss or deafness.
In our first article we highlighted the work being done by Dogs for the Deaf, which offers the gift of companionship to those with hearing loss and deafness. The charity we’re featuring today makes an impact on a global scale.
Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss
The concept of Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss was an idea born nearly five years ago when executive director Paige Stringer traveled across Southeast Asia. While on her journey, she quickly realized that not only was there a shortage of teacher training available, there also was a shortage of quality hearing aids and a general lack of knowledge when it came to the importance of addressing hearing loss.
Based in Seattle, Washington, Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss is supported by a board of directors whose areas of expertise include audiology, education and speech language pathology. With only 10 percent of the world’s deaf children receiving education, this charity seeks to work with developing communities and nations to implement teacher training workshops, professional developmental initiatives and hearing aid programs to benefit children facing deafness and hearing loss.
Since the summer of 2010, Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss has executed training initiatives and hearing health programs that resulted in the training of 190 teachers, 220 families and 120 medical professionals. In addition, the charity has been able to fit 246 hearing aids on young hearing-impaired children. In less than three years, Global Foundation has directly impacted the lives of nearly 1,000 children with its Deaf Education Program.
Are you passionate about bringing hearing health to youth all over the globe? There are several ways to support this cause, including: a holiday donation either online or by check, the donation of a used vehicle or volunteer opportunities for professional and graduate students with experience in the audiology, speech language pathology or intervention specialist fields.
With only one out of 10 deaf children receiving the proper education needed to develop language skills, help Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss achieve their goal today!
