When you look at the facts and statistics, you might be surprised:
  • Breast cancer is the most common, life-threatening form of cancer in women.

  • Its the number one cause of death among Hispanic women; number two for white, black, Asian and Native American women.

  • Typically, 181,000 + women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

  • The National Cancer Institute estimates that 40,460 women will die of breast cancer in 2007.

  • Among different populations, as many as 40% of women have not had a mammogram within the past two years.
The facts are surprising, but when you put a face and a name and a family to each one of those cases, the seriousness of the problem takes on a human dimension. These arent just numbers and facts. These are moms, sisters, daughters, co-workers, neighbors and friends. These are people just like the people you know. Just like you.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Are You Aware?

One of the most surprising statistics is the number of women who don't have annual mammograms, recommended for all women 40 years or older. And for women whose families have a history of breast cancer, annual mammograms should start at an even earlier age. Why?

The early detection of breast cancer is important to cancer survival. The earlier found, the earlier treated, the better the long-term prognosis. And that means its time for women to go proactive. Thats the objective of the yearly National Breast Cancer Awareness program to increase awareness in all people, women and men that breast cancer is one of the most survivable cancers when detected early.

This means regular self-examinations, annual physicals and an annual mammogram if youre in your 40s or older. This campaign supports women through education, free clinics and fund-raising events like the hundreds of breast cancer walk-a-thons that take place across the country during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and throughout the year.

Think Pink from Oticon and Help in the Battle Against Breast Cancer

Oticon is the designer and manufacturer of top quality hearing devices and an ardent supporter of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To increase awareness of this serious medical problem, Oticon has released Think Pink the first in a series of Lifestyle Editions that encourage users to wear their passion on their ears according to a company press release.

Pink is the color associated with breast cancer awareness. Youll see supporters wearing pink ribbons, bracelets, t-shirts and awareness-raising buttons during October, reminding women to take action to protect themselves.

And to honor and support this effort, Oticon will donate a portion of its sales of Think Pink, and all other models within its immensely popular Delta product line, to the American Cancer Society to support further breast cancer research.

The President of Oticon, Peer Lauritsen, put it this way: We have seen the enormous outpouring of support for initiatives that promote breast cancer awareness and research. Pink ribbons and specially designed pink clothing and accessories appeal to consumers in all walks of life. With the new Delta Think Pink we offer people with hearing loss the opportunity to experience unprecedented sound quality and style and at the same time, help support a worthy cause.

Oticon will promote National Breast Cancer Awareness Month using a variety of media. The company is also encouraging hearing health professionals and their clients to take part in the American Cancer Societys Making Strides Against Breast Cancer non-competitive walks to heighten awareness of and raise funds for breast cancer research.

October 21 will be a very special day for a large contingent of Oticon employees who will travel from the companys headquarters in Somerset, New Jersey to New York Citys Central Park to take part in one of the largest American Cancer Society walks anywhere.

By allowing users to make a very personal statement about things that matter most in their lives, the new Delta Lifestyle Edition Think Pink and the other special editions planned for later this year represent another first for our industry. This innovative approach encourages users and potential users to take a closer look at the ways in which Delta is a perfect fit for their lifestyles, Oticons President explained.

So, get aboard, put on those walking shoes and Think Pink. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Support the effort.
